subject: What Is The Hype Around The Memory Foam Mattress? [print this page]

If you have ever watched commercials late at night, then you might be familiar with the memory foam mattress, since these type of commercials have inundated late night television commercials over the last few years. But what is memory foam and is it truly something that everyone should be sleeping on? We'll look at the real story behind memory foam and the costs that go with it.

Memory foam molds around your body when you lie on it. It is composed of something called polyurethane, which is a chemical that makes the material very dense. The memory foam will become soft and will mold to your body when you lie on it, after your body heat has made it pliable, making it an extremely comfortable sleeping area.

Once the person who was lying on the mattress gets up, the memory foam slowly returns to its original shape, without any permanent effects to the mattress. Some of the newer models of memory foam mattress take less time to return to the original shape, and this is a feature discussed by those companies that sell memory foam products.

Originally, it was NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration that developed memory foam, intended to create safer aircraft cushions. At first, the material developed was cost prohibitive when it came to commercial applications, but the costs have gone down considerably.

You can buy a memory foam mattress in quite a few different places. You can either go to a store from a manufacturer that make the memory foam mattress, or you can go to any mattress store and see if they have them available.

There are actually four different aspects of a memory foam mattress that determines the grade of the mattress. The first is the weight, or the density of the mattress, which is basically a measurement of how many pounds per square inch. Another determination is ILD, or the measure of how hard or soft the memory foam is. Resilience is also measured, how springy the mattress is, and also, the stretching ability of the mattress, or tensile, is also measured.

The cost of a memory foam mattress is not prohibitive. However, memory foam mattresses do cost a little more than their spring counterparts. The price is partially based upon the quality of the memory foam however, based upon the measurements that were just explained. You should shop around carefully once you have decided what the specifications are in the memory foam matmtress that you are looking for.
