subject: The Psychology Behind Cosmetic Surgery By Cosmetic Dermatologist Dr Lycka [print this page]

Today I'm going to talk to you about the psychology of cosmetic surgery.

Now, the reason people sometimes dont want to get cosmetic surgery done is because they think its a vanity. Another reason I often hear why people dont want to get cosmetic surgery done is because they say, 'Well, you should live with what you're given'. But you know there are many people that are given cosmetic deformities. There are many people that are given things that they dont want to live with and for those reasons a lot of people seek to change their appearance, and cosmetic surgery can help them a great deal - it can transform their life.

In the year 2012, people are living longer. They're living healthier, better adjusted lives and they want to look and feel younger and there's nothing wrong with that. And this need has given rise to a several billion dollar industry - the cosmetic surgery industry and it consists of cosmetic products, cosmetic procedures etc. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there are two categories of patients who are good candidates for surgery:

1. Patients with a strong self-image who are bothered by a physical characteristic that they'd like to improve or change.

2. Patients who have a physical defect or cosmetic flaw that has diminished their self-esteem over time.

It's important to remember that cosmetic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic procedures can create both physical changes and changes in self-esteem. Sometimes psychological therapy is required to maximise the benefits of cosmetic surgery procedures for the individual patient.

However, some people suffer from Body dysmorphic disorder. BDD is a serious illness in which a person is preoccupied with minor or imaginary physical imperfections. People with BDD tend to have cosmetic surgery, and even if the surgery is successful, they don't think it was and they are unhappy with the outcome. For these people, cosmetic surgery is NOT the answer and they should seek appropriate therapy for their problem.

But for the general public, whatever their reasons for cosmetic surgery, people can look the way they want to, and thats a rational decision. In my mind, I think cosmetic surgery becomes something people want. People want to have it done and there's nothing wrong with that.

I hope you find this advice useful in understanding why people choose to have cosmetic surgery.
