I personally would not have an expensive Leather rug at my front door, with visitors wiping their feet on it, and then having to replace it every 6 months or so!! You do have to plan a few things before buying a Novelty rug, especially if its an expensive one. Why do you want one? Where are you going to put it? How much are you willing to spend? How much is it going to be used and how dirty are you willing to let it get?
So, if it is for the front or back door, this is more commonly known as a High Traffic area and this would need to be a very durable and if possible, a machine washable rug. If you choose to have it placed further down the hallway, at least it would stay slightly cleaner than having it right at the door area. If you were buying a Novelty rug for a family member or friend, I would also be important to consider these options when buying one.
Colour is an important issue to consider when buying a novelty rug!! Or is it? Given the right contrasts, you can place almost any coloured rug into any coloured room. If you cant afford to redecorate a room, or just cant be bothered, all it may just need is a colourful Novelty rug to set off the rest of the room. This would clearly be the cheapest option in some circumstances and the easiest. If you bought a Novelty rug that didnt suit the colour of your room, you could redecorate the room to suit the rug!!!
Now, what shape would you want your Novelty rug to be? Do you want it to fit in with the current design of your choice to lay the rug, or, are you a bit of a rebel and go completely off the scale to impress your friends and family?? Square shaped, heart shaped, round shaped, car shaped, the list is endless.
One of the most important choices to make is.......yes, what design do you want on it? Again, the list is endless, but what about a London Scene rug, a Union Jack/flag rug, Truck printed rug, Keep Calm Carry On rugs and what I consider to be one of the most impressive is the 16p Stamp rug. Although this one is pretty expensive, it is a collectors piece, that I dont think you would let anyone walk on, let alone wipe their feet on it.
If you choose a rug that you feel is too impressive to walk on, try hanging it on the wall. You could even set a new trend with your family and friends by thinking outside of the box!! Just imagine the conversations about the 16p Stamp hanging on your wall, when entertaining guests. Again, if youve got something on the wall you want to cover, this woud be an ideal opportunity.
So youve considered all of the above when choosing and hopefully, buying a Novelty rug. What if you were buying it for an elderly or vulnerable family member, friend or even yourself? What is the most important issue you would have to consider that we have not yet mentioned? SAFETY!!!! Thats what we need to consider. Not just with a Novelty rug, but with all rugs. For someone that has, say, wooden floors? I would be looking to purchase an Anti-Slip pad. This should be placed underneath your chosen rug, or you can even buy the Anti-Slip pad for existing rugs. Purchasing one of these could be a life saver, and theyre not that expensive either. Not only do the pads stop the rug from disappearing from underneath your feet, but it also make the rug feel, just that little more comfortable. Just remember, safety first!!!
So overall, we have to consider, not necessarily in this order, the following when buying not just only a Novelty rug, but any rug.
