subject: A Sense Of Freedom [print this page] There are times in life when it feels like we have no choices and are completely trapped. At times it feels as if we can do whatever we like and aren't tied down by anything. This article focuses on the latter situation.
Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is becoming an increasingly popular activity for people as they look to find a way that challenges them as well as being great exercise and therefore a useful way to keep fit. However, arguably the biggest attraction to the sport for those who take part in rock climbing is that while you're up on a climb you feel incredibly free, yet safe at the same time as you are secured by your harness and ropes etc. Although rock climbing is traditionally done out in the country, because of the problems with transport there are becoming an increasing number of indoor climbing walls which provide many of the challenges traditional rock climbing does, but in a much more convenient way.
Hot Air Balloons
From a young age almost everyone dreams of being able to fly like the birds - to be able to swoop and soar above the ground and to have air around you on each side. Arguably, hot air ballooning is one of the closest ways we can replicate this experience and it certainly does provide a sense of freedom as you climb into that basket and steadily ascend away from the countryside below. Like rock climbing it's also incredibly safe, meaning that while there is a sense of freedom there is also a sense of comfort, making it all the more enjoyable.
Cycling
Cycling in a big city can be dangerous and quite unappealing as you look out for traffic that is not only a threat but also pumps out plenty of unpleasant air. However, many people do it because it is a practical way to get around. On the other hand, cycling in the countryside can be a hugely gratifying experience, as you bomb along quite roads, aware that you're travelling much more quickly than you would on foot and not that much slower than those in a car, yet you are doing so under your own steam, making cycling in this way incredibly empowering.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways we can get that sense of freedom that can make us feel so much better and energetic, and alive. How do you like to get it?
