Kushari: Considered the most famous Egyptian street food and the countrys national dish, Kushari is a meal and a half. Make sure youre starving before trying this combination of carbs pasta, lentils, chick peas and rice are cooked with onions and garlic for an inexpensive but utterly filling meal. Sometimes called the poor mans meal, youll find it served in almost all street food outlets and its quite common to see many Egyptians crowding the stands its served at to get their fill. This is a truly authentic Egyptian dish thatll fill you up a treat!

Sugar cane juice: Juice bars are big news in Sharm-el-Sheikh and a welcome respite from the heat. Serving mainly fresh seasonal juices, sugar cane juice is a stalwart at these bars and is the ultimate pick-me-up when youre in need of an energy boost. Served ice cold in a mug, its natural sugar content makes it a nice albeit authentic alternative to a fizzy or alcoholic drink. Plus, its definitely something you wont get back home.

Halawa: Although common across the Mediterranean, Halawa is one of the few Mediterranean foods that are not affected by the hot weather in Egypt and needs no special storage. Halawa is made from sesame paste and available in a range of products, including energy bars, spreads and blocks. Often eaten as a snack or for breakfast or dinner by Egyptians, it is often paired with other flavours particularly pistachio and almonds. The best way to sample this is in Sakalans, a delicious mixture of Halawa, honey and whipped cream.

Gibna Domiati: Cheese fans must try this soft white cheese, made in the north of the country in the city of Damietta. Traditionally made from buffalo milk, it is the most common cheese found in Egypt and is used in a lot of other dishes too. Or of course, it makes for an indulgent snack on its own.
