subject: Decorating Your House On Diwali [print this page] Diwali signifies the victory of good over evil. It is the festival of lights. People find this joyous festival as a reason to clean and decorate their house. The way we wear new clothes in perfect co-ordination with the traditional aspect attributed to the festive occasion, similarly, we like to decorate our home to give it the traditional Diwali feel.
Let us begin with the cleaning of the house. Dusting or vacuum cleaning is mostly done at every house.
Diyas and candles are a hot favorite among people. They look beautiful and give the desired traditional look to the house along with lighting it out well. Diyas are lit in remembrance of the deceased. One pays respect to one's ancestors by lighting a diya in their name.
They are elegant and eco-friendly. The old, rather, traditional diyas and candles have now been creatively transformed into art pieces with lovely carvings, painting, glitters, mirrors, ribbons, inscriptions etc on them.
You can also make your won diya or candle at home with wax, oil, oil and water in glass container etc. and decorate it the way you please.
Decorative thalis can also be made for the purpose of puja ceremony.
Rangoli is considered to be a harbinger of good luck. It is made usually at the entrance of the house. Use of different colors makes it look picturesque. There can be like a million designs and patterns for making a Rangoli.
Although artificial powder colors are available in the market these days but the traditional rangoli is made with natural components that bear different colors. For example, using wheat flour for white, turmeric for yellow, indigo for blue, flowers for decorations etc. used to be done. Flowers can be of myriad colors and textures. They enhance the beauty of the rangoli in double folds.
People hang garlands of flowers inside and outside their house. They give a nice fragrance to the house and also provide a vibrant look to it. Even the temple in your house can be decorated with flowers, garlands and lights. Lights, long strings of different colored light bulbs are hanged outside the house.
Changing the linens, curtains, cushions or even the paint of your house is a common practice during Diwali.
With the mythological belief and message conveyed by this festival of lights, there is joy in the heart and illumination of the soul.
It is wonderful to give ones house a new look on the onset of festive season. It makes you feel happy and much involved in the celebration of festivities.
You can add your own ideas to give your house a traditional look. Take out grand mom's dinner set and use it for two days. Trust me it would add on to the traditional atmosphere you want to create.
People even decorate their house because they believe Goddess Lakshmi would pay a visit at night and shower her blessings on them.
I hope this Diwali brings you joy and success! Have a safe and happy Diwali!!
