subject: Can You Plan For Retirement? [print this page]

It is not easy to plan for retirementIt is not easy to plan for retirement. If you have having problems, you are not alone. A lot of us tried to save money so we could have a comfortable retirement, but ended up having to delay it because of financial issues, increased costs, or medical expenses. Of course, it is always better to start planning for retirement as early as possible. But you still have time to put your plans back in place.

Would you like to retire early? Many of us would like to leave our full time jobs behind. However, it is harder to plan for an early retirement these days. The more years of retirement living that you have to plan for, the harder it is to predict how much money you will need. In addition, people who are not old enough for Medicare may need to figure out how they can get a private health plan to tide them over. Lots of people tried to plan an early retirement, but ended up staying at work for several more years.

Of course, lots of people have trouble planning to retire on time too. Many sixty-five year old people can figure on living for quite a few more decades. Even if you can predict how much money you will need to live on now, it is impossible to predict the price of gasoline, food, and medical care in the future. It is probably safest to estimate as high a number as possible. Few people ever complain about having too much money after they retire!

One solution to some retirement problems may be a partial retirement. In fact, the idea of semi-retirement has attracted a lot of interet these days. This could mean getting a simple part time job to provide an extra paycheck and some benefits. It could be much more ambitious too. I know lots of people who plan to begin a new career or business after they retire from their current job. Your own options will depend upon your preferences, talents, and skills. Some folks may figure they will get to lounge around during their retirement years. Others plan to start a whole new adventures during the next part of their life.

Sadly, some older workers do not think they can retire at all. They do not see how they can possibly afford to pay their bills without a steady paycheck. For some people, this may be true. Others may simply need to take a hard look at their current expenses. Some people can live quite comfortably on $30,00 a year, while other people have a hard time living on $60,000, $90,000, or even more. Living more frugally might help you solve some retirement issues.

If you start saving for retirement when you are young, it is much better. You might still be able to get your retirement plan back.
