I've personally been in ALL of the above scenarios myself. Commercial interests, arm-chair theoreticians, and well intentioned but misguided "experts" have complicated things to the point where virtually no one knows how to train productively anymore.

After literally 4 years of trying different things and going no where, I started attending local bodybuilding and powerlifting contests. I would just go as a fan and a spectator, but I would stay afterwards just so I could meet and talk to the competitors.
