subject: How Sig Sauer P229 And P226 Are Different [print this page]

Both Sig Sauer P226 and Sig Sauer P229 are service pistols firing the 9x19 mm Parabellum, .357 SIG, .22 LR and .40 S&W. The major difference between the two models are, Sig Sauer 226 is a full-size service weapon while the P229 is a compact version. The design in both P226 and P229 is that of P220 model. The sub variants like the P228 and P229 are being used by law enforcement agencies across the world. Sig Sauer 226 made an entry as trial service pistol for the US Army competing with the Beretta 92F model.

Sig Sauer 229 shot to fame for being a compact firearm that was popular among the duty officers and policemen mainly for its conceal carry. It is a very powerful version with Double Action/Single In its double trigger mechanism reset, the P229 model is also capable of Double Action only action mode. Action trigger mode, mechanical locking and recoil operation. It shares most of the features of the P228 pistol. The barrel is shorter than Sig 226 in 229 but both share some of the same variants such as the Equinox, Elite and SAS Gen 2 models.

There are some noted differences in the making of the two Sig Sauer guns as well. The earlier models of P226 and P228 has aluminum and alloy frame while the latest P229 had stainless steel slide that made it more durable in nature. With the addition of the .357 Sig caliber and the .40 S&W cartridge in the Sig 229, high velocities were produced. The gun version therefore needed the milled steel frame to handle it. The recoil spring became more stiffer compared to that of Sig 226. With evolution in making, the both p226 and the p229 have optional accessory rails available and also stainless steel frames.

Besides the existing calibers, p229 was lastly chambered for the 9 mm as well. The switching of the barrel facilitates firing the many calibers in the gun. The barrel switches between the .40 S&W and .357 SIG calibers.

Among the several versions of the P229, the DAK version is the most popular one. Dak stands for Double Action Kellerman and is available for both P226 and the P229. The trigger pull in this model is 29 N compared to the standard 44 N. The trigger has an almost instant reset with the trigger have a release forward. P226 has more variants than the Sig 229 such as the P226 Rail, p226 Tactical, P226 Navy, p226 Blackwater, P226 Combat and p226 E2. The Classic 22 is present in both P226 and P229.
