subject: How To Write A Thesis [print this page]

Thesis writing is a long effort driven task and getting started with writing a thesis is the hardest part. However, the good part is that once you have started writing, thesis writing tends to get easier.

Starting a thesis

Often scholars are clueless as where to start a thesis. The best approach to start with a thesis is to create an outline of the thesis. A thesis outline will majorly consist of headings, sub headings etc. When you have outlined your thesis into few pages, you can start with a much manageable task of elaborating the headings and sub headings into small paragraphs. Many students find it convenient to start with materials and methodology chapters in thesis writing as this is something they know thoroughly about.

Thesis writing and coursework writing

Theses writing differ from regular coursework writing as in the case of latter; the teacher already has the answers of the tasks given to students. However, in case of a thesis, the teacher or the reader doesnt have the answers. The scholar is required to research a particular area of study and contribute something new to the present sphere of knowledge in that field.

Dos and donts for thesis writing

Few revisions and checks significantly improve the quality of thesis.

Once initial draft is written, the work should be thoroughly checked for correct academic style, grammar and spellings. Slangs and informal language should be completely avoided.

Language should be short and easy to understand. However, the scholar should not eliminate important points or words just to maintain simplicity.

The content should be connected and transitions should be logical.

Using active voice helps in eliminating many grammatical and awkward sentence structure mistakes.

Using bullet points wherever needed is makes it easier to summarize the content. However, this should not be overdone while writing a thesis report.

Working too much to improve the appearance of figures and diagrams is unadvisable. The figures and diagrams should be neat and relevant therefore, using a hand drawn sketch is considered equally good as using a digital version.

Often scholars commit a mistake of thinking that thicker theses are better ones. However, length of the thesis is not an important factor but, quality of thesis is.

A common thesis structure includes

Copyright waiver: The University issues a form to you that gives it the right to publish your work.

Declaration: Usually Universities have a standard wording for declaration of originality. The researcher needs to check the same before including it in the thesis.

Title page: This may be university specific.

Abstract: It tells about the problem addressed, research process and, final conclusions and recommendations. Abstract should be written in the end of a thesis.
