subject: Keeping You House Clean During Home Improvements [print this page] Like many people before me and I'm sure I won't be the last, I replaced the carpet on my landing and stairs, then my wife and I decided we needed to get the bathroom replaced. This left me with the dilemma of what I should do, should I remove the carpet whilst the bathroom is being refitted or should I try and contain the dirt to just the bathroom? After looking at the cost of how much it would be to have the carpet temporarily removed and then replaced when we finished, we decided that we would try and keep the dust and dirt down to a minimum.
I looked at many different products from many suppliers and decided to get plastic sheeting for the carpets in the hall, stairs and landing and a plastic sheet zip door for the bathroom to stop the dust going everywhere in the house.
Although there were some standard sheeting options available the carpet protection we chose was self adhesive and stuck to the carpet, we chose the self adhesive option primarily due to the stairs as we didn't want the kids or ourselves tripping up, or the sheeting moving and dirt getting to the carpet.
The plastic sheeting door was a great idea, my wife's that is; it worked really well and stopped the dust from travelling throughout the house. It fixed to the external part of the door frame and enabled me to keep the dust contained to just the bathroom. For those of you who have had plastering done before, you'll know that plaster dust gets everywhere and it seems to impregnate soft furnishings with a dust film. Whilst the work was being carried out we had to do no extra cleaning. I can honestly say that this type of product is worth every penny, saying that it only cost around 20. A definite for future projects!
After we completed the bathroom the plastic sheeting was easily removed from the carpets and door frame which pleasingly left no residue. We simply vacuumed the carpets and I can thankfully say that we managed to get our bathroom completed and the carpets looked as good as new.
We are not looking to renovate any areas of our home in the near future but when we do I'll definitely be using these protective materials again, it just saves so much time on clearing up, not to mention the cost of replacing the carpets.
