subject: Help With Understanding A Computer [print this page]

Are you old enough to remember when it was amusing that individuals could not program the VCR? Those same people who were laughing at their parents because they cannot program their VCR are now having difficulty keeping up with some of the newer technology that may be available. Of course, the younger generation typically has a tight grasp on the technology and can even discuss it in great detail with other individuals. As we age, however, we tend to lose the ability, to a large extent, that will help us to discuss the newer technology intelligently.

Of course, that does not necessarily need to be the case, and there are some things that you can do in order to improve your ability to speak the computer language, regardless of whether you are talking to the person at your local hardware store or if you are discussing it with an IT professional from your company. In either case, being able to speak about the technology that you are using intelligently not only allows you to sound intelligent, it also helps you to be able to get your point across when necessary. Here are a few tips that can assist you in not only keeping up with technology but also catching up to a large extent.

First of all, it is not necessary for you to go through an intense computer IT training course in order to be able to understand the computer that is sitting in front of you. There is plenty of information that is available online as well as at your local bookstore that can assist you through the process. It is important to understand, however, that much of the information that is available can be learned through books, but it is not necessarily going to translate well when it comes to speaking to other individuals. This is especially the case with specific terms that are used in technology that may easily be mispronounced as well as computer acronyms that should be understood.

Of course, the best way for you to be able to keep up with technology is to continue to work with technology at home and in your business. If you simply allow the technology that you are using to go stale, it is going to be impossible for you to eventually catch up. It is also not necessary, however, for you to be using the latest and greatest technology in order to understand what is being said in the IT field. You simply need to have a broad understanding of computers and the in-depth understanding will follow.

If I can give you one more piece of advice about keeping up with technology, it would be to give yourself the time to do so. They say that Rome wasn't built in a day, so you certainly should not expect that you will understand everything that there is to know about the computer you are using in a day. There are going to be some growing pains along the way, but if you are patient through the learning process, you will actually find that you are benefiting from it.
