subject: Choosing And Trusting A Nanny Agency [print this page]

When it comes to childcare nothing is more important than a mutual trust and understanding from the parent and also that of the caregiver. As a parent you need to feel comfortable leaving your child alone with a babysitter, nanny, or other caregiver. If you are using a nanny agency to help you find a childcare professional, you need to be able to trust them as well. How do you know which agency to use?

First, you need to have an in depth conversation about what your childcare needs are. If you have a special needs child, many children of different ages, or multiples, you need to be upfront with that information. The only way a nanny agency can find you the perfect match for your family is if they know what you need.

You also need to know about the screening process of the nanny agency. You will want to find out how in depth it is and how detailed. You do not want to hire someone to take care of your children based on a "good vibe" you want someone who is not only qualified but passes a series of benchmarks when it comes to background checks. Does your nanny agency perform criminal checks? Do they have multiple interviews? You will want to make sure they are performing many different checks and following up on their references.

In addition to discussing your needs for your family you should also discuss your wants for a nanny or caregiver with the nanny agency. If you want someone who has their CPR and child first aid certifications you should voice that desire. You should also be able to tell them if you want someone bilingual or someone with a car. Be sure though that if you are requesting a nanny with a vehicle that the nanny agency also performs a driving background check as well. You want to feel safe when your child is being driven around town by their caregiver.

Regardless of which agency and which nanny you choose, you should never let anyone tell you that you're being too picky. When it comes to childcare and inviting someone into your home you're allowed to be choosey. Make sure you are comfortable with the agency and their practices. Check up on the reviews of the agency and make sure that whomever they select for you is actually right for you and for your family.
