subject: Reminiscing And Modern Light Fixtures [print this page]

I used to live in an old houseI used to live in an old house. And by old, I mean a house that was built at least sixty years ago. Granted it has seen some remodeling and wholesale renovations but you can tell it is not a brand new house. Both from the outside and from within visitors can easily spot telltale signs that the house was not something built in the last ten or so years. The first notice sign, aside from the architectural design of the house itself, are the old lights. They look nothing like modern light fixtures; the porch light and two accompanying exterior sconce lamps have a look of wrought iron.

Inside the house the first room people see is the living room. There was a somewhat new standing floor lamp but it is a far cry from the one I have now in my new place. Going deeper into the house sat the dining room with a ceiling lamp; it was a combination ceiling fan and lamp. Compared to the modern ceiling lamp I have now which does not have the fan, the old ceiling fan was quaint but lacked the sleek and stylish look of modern lighting.

And that is what is attractive about modern light fixtures; their appearance. For example, I have two standing floor lamps and even though one of them has three heads, this particular while having three heads, is thin and has adjustable arms. It was also easy to move around. The standing lamp in the old house was the complete opposite of that; it was large, heavy thing with only one light bulb. Moving this thing around was an effort in weight lifting to say the least. And as far as appearance goes it would not look great in my new apartment complex which was built within the last ten years.

Even though I miss the old house and the charming furnishings within it did not take much for me to let any of those things go. Sure I have a lot of memories associated with the house but we all move on eventually. The light fixtures, while charming in their own right, were outdated and had no real place in my new apartment. Sleek and fashionably functional modern light fixtures were the only way to go when I moved into my new place a couple of months ago. Even though I was kind of to leave those old lights in the old house it was necessary.
