subject: Stockings- Time To Bring Back The Classic Style! [print this page]

Never believe anyone who tries to tell you that stockings have gone out of fashion. The simple yet elegant pieces of clothing have a long history and, given their enduring style, endless practicality, and incredible comfort, they are bound to stick around forever.

Few know this these days, but the items were actually predominately worn by men in the early days of their history. They were largely practical garments used to keep individuals warm in the cold months of the year. Prior to the seventeenth century stockings were made out of cloth woven by manufacturers. Then, knitting machines revolutionised the process and added to comfort and quality of the product.

It was not until the 1920s that women started to wear these pieces for fashionable purposes. Before then they, as men did, wore them to keep the body warm in the colder months. By the 1920s, however, it became increasingly appropriate for women to wear higher and higher dresses; as such, fashionable coverings for the legs became an absolute necessity. At the time, many natural products were used to produce the increasingly essential accessories, typically from wool, silk, or linen. Another very common material that developed later was lisle, which is essentially polished cotton and is famously produced in the Irish town of Balbriggan. Finally, rayon became a practical solution for creating a silk-like feel.

Actresses and dancers further popularised the accessories, and before long, stockings became incredibly famous. They were preferred to tights (and still are) because of their supposedly increased comfort and hygiene. Stockings are preferred by many thanks to the fact that they are less constricting than tights, many experts believe that this makes them a healthier choice for women.

In addition, the items simply have a sexier appeal, as demonstrated in films and on television, which is much preferred to that for pantyhose, which often are perceive as clumsy or old-fashioned.

These days, women continue to wear stockings for their fashionable appeal and sexy feel. Yes, they are still about practicality, but the charms of a fashionable pair are undeniable, both to observers of a woman in a mid-length skirt or dress somewhere on the street, or in a more private venue. They look great in fashionable dresses and go well with high heels or any other shoe that is meant to accentuate a womans legs. Know that these items of clothing are a must-have for any fashionista!
