subject: Selecting A Physiotherapist For Your Sports Injuries [print this page]

When you appoint a physiotherapist you need to make sure from the outset that you can communicate honestly and openly with and you feel comfortable with.

Physiotherapists charges vary from clinic to clinic and you may need quite a few sessions so check from the outset on what the cost is and what it covers, and for how long.

A qualified physiotherapist in the UK will have studied successfully a three year degree course. For those who have certain qualifications already may be able to take a two year course.

All physiotherapists must be registered with the Health Professions Council before they are legally able to practice. The HPC regulates 15 health professions. It is a criminal offence for a physiotherapist to practice as one without being registered with the HPC.

Most UK physiotherapists are Chartered Physiotherapists and this means that they belong to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Not all UK physiotherapists are chartered.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists is the only professional, trade-union and educational body for those working in or studying physiotherapy in the United Kingdom

When seeking a physiotherapist, look for one who has experience in your kind of problem. Larger clinics will have more physiotherapists and therefore the chances are that more types of cases can be treated by an expert.

Some clinics specialize in sports injuries for example, whilst others cater for every time of injury.

Pregnancy can cause some problems which can be treated by a physiotherapist, for example symphysis pubis dysfunction, which causes terrible pain in the hips.

The knee whilst being the most complicated joint in the body often presents problems due to sport injuries, such as the four main ligaments. The anterior cruciate ligament is one of the two major ligaments in the knee. The posterior cruciate ligament is the second most important ligament in the knee connecting the thigh bone to the shin bone in the knee.

The lateral collateral ligament and the medial collateral ligament are also major ligaments which can cause debilitating pain when torn.

The internet can provide a great source of support when choosing a good physiotherapist. Most professionals are members of Linked In which presents a profile of that individual.

Furthermore Google maps provides customers reviews. However not every clinic will have an account on Google maps.

When you make contact with a clinic you ought to feel comfortable. A warm greeting obviously is welcoming. On the first appointment your physio will need to understand as much as possible about the problem. After the first appointment you will be given a good idea of how many sessions you are likely to need and how you can help the case along by doing exercises at home.

If you have been successfully treated by a great physio then it is good practice to give them a review or testimonial so that others can benefit.
