subject: 10 Things That Make You Look Bad On Twitter [print this page] We've all made a mistake (or two) on social media before. Most of the time it's a simple spelling or grammar error but what about bigger mistakes? We've all seen many examples of why you need to be careful with the way you present yourself in your social media marketing strategy.
Don't make these 9 Twitter mistakes or potentially face the wrath of an angry social mob:
1. Follow and unfollow somebody nonstop. Some people put this on par with social media stalking. It's uncool, unwelcome and, most importantlydoesn't work!
2. Unnecessary and excessive use of CAPS LOCK. Why are you screaming at me?
3. Post coupons, deals and specials for products no one has interest in. For example, "Swimsuits for off." No one cares in January unless they live in the tropics or are perpetually on vacation. Be mindful of the deals you promote and make sure they make sense to those who will see it.
4. Pretending you're buddies with all sorts of celebrities online. I personally find this amusing to witness but it's truly quite sad since it's not too difficult to figure out if you are "somebody" online. A simple Google search will reveal you for your true self and unleash no extra credibility for you. In fact, this is one of the fastest ways to get unfollowed by friends, coworkers and business associates.
5. Don't just pay attention to your connections with 10,000+ followers on Twitter, they could very well be your perfect clients. Twitter can be a powerful part of your social media marketing strategy, but not if you neglect potentially valuable connections.
6. You exclusively comment on trending topics and lack a mind of your own. Be yourself and offer up something unique and stimulating. Show people that you have your own thoughts and ideas!
7. Your tweets are not just random but they are vague and uninteresting. Great examples of this are, "Gotta fix that water cooler," or "Man, have you tried that acai berry?" You get the idea.
8. You constantly complain. This requires no elaboration. Don't do it!
9. You act like the expert on every subject even though you are not. Save your pearls of wisdom for the stuff you truly know what you're talking about. It will go so much further!
10. You share every dull moment with enthusiasm. Examples: "I just ate half a grilled cheese sandwich," and "OMGSnooki is having a baby!" or "That grilled cheese wasn't great. Good, but not great." Just do us a favor and ditch the lunch-related tweets unless food tweets are your "schtick". In which case, more power to you!
Indulge in moderation, my friendsor you might just start to notice an influx of unfollows on Twitter after every tweet.
Do your best to use Twitter intelligently within your social media marketing strategy. The word strategy is in there for a reason!
