subject: Use Music When Teaching English To Pupils [print this page]

For teachers of ESL and EFL, it is necessary to move beyond the book and use alternative activities in the class room. What might be more fun than using songs to show English? Listed below are several ways that music can be used by you to make your class room more exciting.

One of the simplest ways to add a song is to remove all appearances of the grammar point from the lyrics. For instance, if the grammar point is adjectives, and the lyrics are, "I am so exhausted," the fill-in-the-blank worksheet will show, "I am so ______." Give your students the worksheets and keep these things try to fill in the blanks while listening to the song.

If the song you are playing uses a lot of verbs, play the song for them when with no lyrics. Every time the pupils understand a verb, they have to do something it out. This can be a great deal of fun and gets the class relaxed. Yet another popular activity would be to cut up most of the lyrics. Most people separate them by line, but you might also take action by phrase, that is the choice. Split the class in to groups and give each team a set of lyrics. Play the tune and also have them try to place all the lines in the right sequence.

To introduce a song to the class, split them into two teams. Explain that the track contains a particular grammar point that you have already been studying. They must raise their hand, if someone hears that grammar point. If they recognize it correctly, their team gets a point. It is a great plan to stop the song at this point so that you do not miss anything.

If the song you are using is not linked to a specific grammar point, but rather to a theme, that is acceptable! Play the song first without the lyrics and have students write down anything nouns are seen that is relevant to the theme : by them, verbs, adjectives, etc.

Of course, the preceding activities could be combined or transformed to create different activities at any Uceda English school. For example, Listening for Points and Act Out The Verb might be joined to create a fun and competitive action. I realize that students often have more involved when it is a contest, even if there is not a prize!

After any action, make sure to take a few minutes and sing the song as a course! The students enthusiasm will be influenced by yours, so be excited about it. Singing the tune after these activities can give your students a sense of accomplishment. They have only discovered some authentic materials and therefore are happy with it!
