subject: Take Advantage Of Discount Golfing To Play The Best Courses In England [print this page]

Last week saw the biggest names in golf descend on California for the US Open, a championship that British golfing fans were hopeful could be won by one of the fantastic British players that are on the circuit today. Although hopes were high that Rory McIlroy could retain the title he won in 2011, in the end it was Webb Simpson who went on to win the event.

Regardless, it is hard to deny that the quality of British golf at the moment is up there with the very best. British fans are finally being rewarded for their support, and it is important that this steady stream of local talent does not end here.

In a bid to encourage the British public to dig out their golf sets and head out for a round, we are compiling the best courses in the British Isles. Here are Englands contestants:

1.Royal St. Georges This course was opened in 1887 in Sandwich in Kent and is widely regarded as the best golf course in England. It was the first course in England to host the British Open and has hosted thirteen more Opens since making it the most used English course in the British Open. These statistics really speak for themselves when considering how good the course really is.

2.Royal Birkdale In 1894 this course was extended to the 18-hole course we see today. It is situated up in Merseyside near Liverpool and has hosted nine open championships in its time, the last of which was won by Padraig Harrington in 2008. This course is all about the variety of challenging holes it has to offer, offering little in the scenery department. According to experts this course ranks as the twenty-sixth best course in the world.

3.Sunningdale This course is situated in the somewhat golf saturated surroundings of the Surrey and Berkshire sand-belt. This area of the country is renowned for its unbelievable golf courses and Sunningdale really is the pick of the bunch. This course is often touted as the most picturesque course in England, boasting some beautiful woodland with some stunning pine, birch and oak trees. The old course was opened in 1901 and is renowned for some stunningly beautiful holes. The fifth hole of the course features in a book named the 500 worlds greatest golf holes which is a perfect indication of just how good this course is. It is ranked as the twenty-eighth best in the world.
