subject: Diabetes - Becoming A Silent Killer [print this page]

Diabetes is known to be one of the most common and life threatening diseases in today's world. It is a chronic disease which once occurs, does not recover and slowly and silently it kills the individual. It is marked by very high levels of sugar in the blood.

CAUSE

Usually it is caused when the levels of insulin-a hormone produced by the pancreas to control the level of blood sugar, decreases from the body. People having diabetes generally possess high blood sugar level as pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or their body cells and muscles do not react to the insulin.

Types

Generally three widespread kinds of diabetes prevail at present.

The first type of diabetes is diagnosed during childhood termed juvenile diabetes. This is usually detected when an individual is 12-20 years of age. The body does not produce any insulin due to which level of glucose in body rises.

In the second type, the pancreas does not make any insulin because the body does not respond to the insulin in it. Thus glucose level is not captured by insulin. These are becoming more common nowadays due to people becoming obese, their lethargic lifestyle, lack of exercise and uncontrolled diet habit.

The third type of diabetes known as Gestational diabetes is detected in a woman during her pregnancy. This can be controlled after deliver. However those who do not control the same during young age tend to develop cardio vascular diseases later in life.

Syndromes:

Blurred vision, frequent urination in the night, excessive thirst and fatigues, weight loss and hunger loss are considered as the syndromes. People with juvenile diabetes for a long period of time also sometimes become blind. Also all organs are slowly and silently damaged by this killer disease. People can get to know their diabetes level by glucose fasting.

Treatment

By having medicines like Metformin this disease can be kept little under control. Also people with more diabetes can take the help of insulin injections. A permanent remedy is having food which is less in sugar content and regular exercise. This is how diabetes can be kept under control.
