subject: Some Of The Problems Of Doing Business In Mongolia [print this page] Mongolia is increasingly in the news, with articles related to the exiting growth in Mongolia providing a welcome change from the doom and gloom in the rest of the world. However as people talk about Mongolia there is a tendency to ignore or downplay the problems and difficulties of doing business or jobs in Mongolia.
Those people who are talking up the Mongolian story often pay lip service to the fact that some things are just difficult in Mongolia, just as there are difficulties in all markets.
I firmly believe that there is huge opportunity in Mongolia. I have come to Mongolia to start a company here and it has been fantastic. However it is not all plain sailing! I will talk about two areas that we hear are challenges for international companies on a regular basis recruitment of Mongolian employees and Bureaucracy.
Recruitment
Finding Mongolian employees who speak English and have the right skills is a recognised challenge in Mongolia, with companies struggling to find reliable, experienced, employees. The market is growing at a very fast rate across all industries. As a result businesses are growing rapidly and talent is often the biggest brake on a companys potential. The talent pool is scarce and the right people are often hard to find, and generally not actively looking.
So how to get these people into your company?
Adverts in newspapers is a traditional method, but unless you are Oyu Tolgoi you are not likely to get even many people applying to your advert, let alone the people you really want applying.
Asking your current staff to put the word around their friends and family, not a bad idea. However it is a bit hit and miss as to if you find the right person. It is worth a try, just dont expect too much success.
