subject: Omega 3 And The American Diet [print this page]

Bluntly speaking, you will not get enough omega 3 in your diet if you are eating an American type diet. Fish is not the major component of our diets, most people prefer to eat junk food as opposed to nutritious food. We believe that we are eating for our health, but on reading articles and getting to know of this missing ingredient in our diet, we find we are very lacking. The number of fatalities due to heart attacks and strokes shows we are not doing well.

How can Americans improve their eating habits and live longer? It's pretty simple. Add one little capsule of omega 3 of one gram, thrice a day. Or take one that slowly disperses over the day and take it once a day. It's really too easy. following this regimen could help you live a longer healthier life.

Most people think that this is just the next scam to make money on people sending them rushing to the stores to purchase omega 3 supplements. Its certainly not a scam. Omega 3 can help keep your heart strong, keep your blood moving easily through your veins, keep your bones stronger, help with your brain functions, helps prevent Macular Degeneration, improve the immune system, and helps to retain the moisture of the skin. That is a lot of things that is becoming known that omega 3 helps.

Don't like to eat fish? Not a problem. Just pop a pill. I am trying to reduce my intake of pills, and looking for one that is only taken once a day instead of 3 times a day.

Omega 3 contains the fatty acids EPA and DHA. You need both of these to help the proper functioning of the body. You can get them by eating fish such as mackerel, tuna, halibut, salmon, sardines, etc. These fatty acids are found in cold water oily fish. It's one fat we should never eliminate from our diets.

Other sources, and one of the best is flax seed oil which you can take in form of capsule or simply eat flax seeds. There are English walnuts, sunflower seeds, canola oil, and many more sources by which you can get omega 3 into your diet without taking an omega 3 capsule. The most important thing is, how do you know you are taking it in sufficient quantity. By taking the pills, you know how much you are taking in a day.

I prefer to take flax seed oil capsules at this time. They are one of the best sources for getting omega 3 and they are absolutely safe. There are other risk-free ways to get it too. I only feel a bit squeamish about fish oil capsules. They may contain mercury and other pollutants from the fish living and eating things in the water ways they are captured in. Even the fish bred in farm ponds or raised commercially may not be good. They may be injected with antibiotics and also the water running off the fields into farm ponds is polluted with fertilizer and insect killers sprayed in the fields. Its therefore not absolutely safe to take them. Make sure to read the label on the bottle to see where the fish come from and what they are saying about pollutants. Also taking fish oil can sometimes cause unpleasant burping with a fish taste.

It is immaterial which type of omega 3 you decide on, it's time to get started and stay healthy for life. No better time to start than today.
