subject: Nikon P300 Review [print this page]

Unless you are a professional photographer, there are only a few aspects that would be of interest to you prior to buying a digital camera. For beginners, the three most important factors are the resolution of the camera, the ease of use and the price.

Nikon P300 hits the bulls' eye in all the three departments. With 12 MP, it outdoes almost every other reputed camera in its class. What we find most commonly is 10 MP and Nikon P300 is certainly a better choice from this perspective. The Nikon Coolpix P300 is extremely sleek, light and fits into a pocket without any drama. The 3 inch LCD screen at the back has 921 K dots and the overall functioning is one of the easiest that you can get.

Nikon P300 has been strictly aimed at beginners and photography enthusiasts and with its size and ease of use, it has managed to impress. The price factor, which is not a department where Nikon can claim to be very consumer friendly, does not go against the Nikon Coolpix P300. Compared with most other models in its class (namely the Canon S95 or the Olympus XZ-1), Nikon P300 is a pocket friendly digital camera.

Delving a little deeper into the technicalities, there are two aspects that are noteworthy. The first is the capability of Nikon P300 to deliver full HD 1080p. Most cameras in its range manages only 720p which is not full HD. The second aspect is that the camera is extremely fast. Whether you take wide angle shots or random ones, the Nikon Coolpix P300 is supremely responsive.

The fact that the lens of the Nikon P300 is optically stabilized reminds us of the beginner level DSLRs of the company, especially the D3000. Not to draw any comparison with Nikon P7000 or the D series, there are several aspects where the Nikon P300 tries to emulate the DSLR experience and in most cases it manages to succeed.

There are hardly any shortcomings of the Nikon Coolpix P300 apart from the sensor and the fact that the camera cannot record raw files. Raw files may be a concern for only a handful of people but the smaller sensor will not be a concern for most photographers. Considering that starters would not be accustomed with larger sensors such as the 1/1.6", most would not find any difference with the 1/ 2.3" that the Nikon P300 boasts of. Nikon P300 is certainly one of the best digital cameras in its class and at its price.
