subject: Terry Redlin Art: The Master And Nature As His Mistress [print this page]

Nature found a champion on July 11, 1937 when the American artist Terry Redlin was born. His hometown South Dakota bore witness to the makings of a great artist who highlighted the best of what nature has to offer. As a young boy, this prolific artist was called as Window Terry by his teachers because of his tendency to sit by the window to gaze at the outdoors.

He initially wanted to be a forest ranger so he could connect with the nature, but a motorcycle accident put a halt to his dream. This accident led him to pursue the arts. He enrolled and finished an art degree at St. Pauls School for the Associated Arts. Today, the world has come to know the Terry Redlin art.

The master used to be a graphic artist at Brown and Bigelow and was also a designer in Webb Publishing. His talent became his tool in becoming an art director, but because of a series of terminations within the company, his sheer determination prompted him to set a goal of becoming a wildlife print artist within five years. Using the skills and the discipline he developed in art school, he learned to be skillful in using the camera and creating canvas prints.

While becoming more and more adept in creating wildlife art, Redlin kept his job at Webb Publishing until he had decided to launch his career as a wildlife artist. This decision changed his life and resulted in an impressive career in the world of art.

The distinctive Terry Redlin art began its journey when the Winter Snows landed on the cover of Farmers Magazine in 1977. Since then, the star of his distinctive art style shone brilliantly in the art scene. From 1981 to 1985, he has received numerous accolades including the Minnesota Duck Stamp competition and also the Minnesota Trout Stamp contest. In 1982, Redlin placed second in the Federal Duck Stamp Competition. His art style also made him the Artist of the Year and Conservationist of the Year for Ducks Unlimited (National and Minnesota) and Minnesota Waterfowl Association respectively.

The National Association of Limited Edition dealers awarded him with the Lithograph of the Year thrice for his expertise in using the medium. From Winter Snows, Redlin pushed himself to more artistic endeavorshe created collector plates, wrote a book and even made a series of painting based on the opening stanza of "America the Beautiful". Not bad for Window Terry, huh.

His brand of art revolves around the use of light. In each painting, light is used to convey the image of dusk, dawn, and night. This ability resulted in magnificent displays of spectacular sunsets, sparkling water, and tranquil nights. His works featured birds in flight with their wings majestically open against the skies, children playing, snow-capped mountains, thick clouds, houses and cabins - all part of the great outdoors. Terry Redlin is an artist who honored nature in every piece he created.

The Terry Redlin art is proof of his determination and love for the natural world. Every nook and cranny of the great outdoors is painted in vivid detail to show his determined effort to present an image of what Mother Nature should be - grand, imposing and unsoiled. Nature is indeed very lucky to have Terry Redlin as its champion.
