subject: How To Properly Control Pests [print this page]

Pests are home owners' worst enemiesPests are home owners' worst enemies. They are everywhere and if you cannot control them, they could damage your house. Termites or pest damage can be very expensive on your part. So, as a homeowner, it is your responsibility to protect your house through pest control and regular pest inspection. Here are the things that you can do to prevent pests from ruining your beautiful home.

1. Like humans, pests also need food, water and shelter. To eliminate this problem, you have to eliminate sources of food, water and shelter. Clean your home properly; store your food properly and seal off holes and other possible entrances of pests.

2. As for food storage, you can use plastic or glass containers. This way, they wouldn't be able to smell and get to it.

3. Your food scraps must be eliminated properly. Your garbage cans must be tightly covered. Make sure that you dispose your garbage regularly. This way, pests and other insects couldn't linger in your house.

4. Mosquitoes, other insects, raccoons and rodents need water to survive. Make sure that there is no stagnant water in your house. If you have leaky plumbing, fix it immediately. If you have birds and other pets, make sure that you replace their water after 2 or 3 days to prevent the increase of the population of mosquitoes. As much as possible, pet food and water must not be left out over night.

5. Did you know that the messier your house is, the better it is for pests? It provides a good place for them to hide and breed. So if you have an attic or a basement, make sure that you clean it on a regular basis. Better yet, if you have stacks of old magazines or newspapers, throw them away.

6. Rodents and insects can get in your house even through the smallest holes. What you can do is to close these cracks or holes. Cover it using wire mesh or steel wool. You can also leave mouse traps in these holes just in case they can still get in. But if you've properly covered it, you don't need to use mouse traps.

7. Make sure that you know the pests that are invading your house. This way, you would know how to properly control and get rid of them.

8. When you have packages or boxes from the mail, make sure that you check it first before bringing it inside your home. You have to make sure that there are no pests inside it.
