subject: End Of The Line For The Limon Express Near Your Alicante Villas [print this page]

You may have heard of the Limon Express while at your ALICANTE VILLAS. You may have read so much about it on websites when planing your holiday and thought about the trip from Alicante or even south from Denia. Sadly though, it is no more. Many websites extolling the terrific value for money using the route that runs from Alicante north to Denia, rattling on the narrow gauge track through the fabulous beautiful rugged countryside with stations at all the main towns and villages.

The websites are not telling lies but unfortunately, as with everything on the internet, the page will be there forever until someone takes it down, like some unwanted poster pinned to the lamp post. The website has not been managed or someone has not bothered to check out the truth of what they are writing. Sadly it is no more the demise of the Limon Express, brought about by the building of the new fast track coming from the north linking France to southern Spain. Although that route has not yet finished, the Limon Express has.

You can experience the route to a large degree though. There is a tram that runs along most of the track but really not the same as the original Limon Express. When it was decided to build the fast track, the new electrified track proved wider than the original FGV, they felt the cost of replacing the wheels of the Limon Express was too much and the carriages were placed in a siding at Benidorm. You can still see the train as you pass along the tracks from the motorway; the carriages mostly covered in graffiti now.

There was a time when there was talk of replacing the train, in fact more a case of putting new wheels on the carriages so that the train could fit on the new tracks. Sadly the cost was felt to be a little excessive for the small popular train. The only alternatives now from the old and famous Limon Express is to take a train or a tram from Benidorm. The tram is nearest to the feel of the old Limon Express but is sadly just not the same.

It is worthwhile as an experience because the different view of the countryside, away from the main roads the hassle of driving, can be quite exciting as the tram plunges through tunnels and trundles over bridges. It is also worth taking the train into Alicante if you have not already got an ALICANTE VILLAS for your summer holidays for a day away in the city. It is in itself an impressive vibrant city with an attractive waterfront, a great shopping experience and beautiful vistas.
