subject: Solve Your Dandruff Dilemma [print this page]

I"ve had dandruff for many yearsI"ve had dandruff for many years. I have tried every shampoo available in the market and though they work for a while, they are of no use after sometime. Is there any permanent solution to this?

Before trying to find a permanent solution to dandruff, it is important to first make sure that you have a dandruff problem and not some other scalp condition that only looks like dandruff. Ninety per cent of patients with scales on their scalp incorrectly identify their condition as dandruff. The most common is either increased scalp sebum secretion or scalp infections. For example, scalp sebum is a sticky secretion produced by the scalp oil glands. Everyone has this secretion "" some more, some less. In those who have it more, the sebum starts accumulating on the scalp in the form of white deposits and when the patient scratches his head, it comes out as white scales on the finger nails and therefore looks like dandruff. But this is not dandruff, and therefore do not expect this to be remedied by anti-dandruff shampoos. Similarly, scalp infections are often mistaken for dandruff because theyalso manifest as scales on the head. But as it is not dandruff, it would not be addressed by anti-dandruff s h a m p o o s. Some medicated shampoos do help, but they have been so often misused that scalp conditions have become resistant to them. Therefore, one of the best ways to deal with scales on the scalp is to identify the condition correctly. Your indiscriminate use of various shampoos may be making the condition more chronic and difficult to treat.
