subject: The Perfect Candle Wick For Your Luxury Scented Candle [print this page]

The best handmade candles have extremely well-made wicks.

A string, cord, or wooden object holds scented candle flame, wicks work by drawing the fuel to the flame.

A well-made wick is incredibly important because it influences how quickly the candle burns.

You should pay special attention to the characteristics of wicks on luxury scented candles - such as diameter, stiffness, fire-resistance, and tethering.

How to choose wicks for your luxury scented candles

The larger the diameter of your wicks, the larger your flame, the larger melted wax pool you will have and the faster your candle will burn.

Usually, luxury candle wicks are normally made from cotton, often with a stiff inner core.

Until fairly recently, the core was made from lead. These have been banned for several years due to lead poisoning concerns.

Zinc is now the preferred material, used as a safe replacement for lead. Other core materials include paper and synthetic fibres.

The candle also needs an initial fuel source - which is why wicks are often coated with wax. Although the wick burns, the real fuel source is the melted wax. Wicks are also treated with flame-resistant solutions.

Wicks are braided flat so they also curl back into the flame, making them self-consuming.

Tealights are a slightly different case because the wick is attached to a piece of metal to prevent it burning before the wax does.

Wholesale candles that float in water need a tether and a seal on the bottom of the candle to stop the wick getting extinguished.

Although is is possible to make wicks from materials other than string and cord, they are rare.

Making your own wholesale scented candle wicks

If you like, you can make you own wicks for luxury scented candles to fit your specifications more precisely.

Step 1: Make a candle wick solution using two tablespoons of Borax, one tablespoon of salt and a cup of water - and stir them together.

Step 2: Soak your cotton cord into your solution allowing the cotton cord to sit in the mixture for about 36 hours Then, remove the roll of cotton cord and set it out to dry on top of some old newspapers.

Step 3: Lastly you must prepare your candle wick. After it has dried, use a pair of scissors to cut the cotton cord into the desired lengths. Allow for a little extra cord and tie one end of each wick onto a metal paper clip, acting as the wicks base.
