subject: Urban Farming In The Great Pacific Northwest [print this page]

Have you ever thought, Well golly, I sure wish I could grow my own produce and raise my own livestock. The only thing holding me back is that I live in a neighborhood in the suburbs of Portland? With various cities throughout Oregon being organic friendly, many people share this same thought. What many people dont know is that urban farming is prominent in many Oregon cities, Portland in particular.

There are many people in Portland who have made their urban farms into a personal small business. For example, Stacey Givens is the owner of Side Yard farmin NE Portland. She provides fresh and organic produce to eight local restaurants in Portland. Click here to read the full article about her farm provided by The Oregonian.

Many people urban farm for the personal use to provide fresh produce for themselves and their families. Simply growing a seasonal garden is a great idea to urban farm. Each year (if youre up to it) you can expand your urban farm in your own backyard. Following city laws, of course, you can also raise small livestock animals if you choose too. Chickens and rabbits are great livestock animals for the city. Chickens will provide you with eggs everyday and rabbits will provide you with healthy meat. In fact, rabbit meat has 795 calories per pound (while, for example, pork meat has 2,050 calories per pound).

If you are too busy or cant afford to start an urban farm, there are several alternatives. The Farm My Yard project provides the Portland area with an option to let professional urban farmers turn their yards into urban farms. Simply put a farm my yard in your front lawn and, just like Field of Dreams, people (urban farmers) will come.
