subject: How To Run A Restaurant [print this page]

Are you thinking about opening up a restaurant in your local area? There are many benefits in doing so, although there are also some risks that are associated with it as well. If you are familiar with the restaurant business, you likely know that there are certain things which can be done in order to increase your odds of success. Although this list is certainly not one that is complete, it can help to point you in the right direction and give you the most chance for success with your new restaurant business.

The first thing that you need to understand is good customer service. It is not only important for you to understand this as the owner, but everyone that works for the restaurant needs to understand that as well. It is very important for you to ensure that those who are dealing with customers are dealing with them properly. Unfortunately, people do tend to be a bit rude and it can be difficult to be in the situation of handling those individuals with a good attitude. It is necessary, however, for you to do so because too many bad marks against your restaurant can easily lead to its downfall.

Another important part about operating a successful restaurant is understanding when to up sell. Some of this is going to be done directly on the menu, but there are also some ways for your waiters and waitresses to incorporate the upsell into their routine as well. For example, they can make helpful suggestions as to additional items which can be purchased, in particular, appetizers and desserts. Make sure that you are making useful suggestions, however, and not simply trying to upsell for the purpose of making more money. The customer is generally going to be able to tell the difference. Try running some contests among your staff to see who is able to upsell with the most success.

Have you given any consideration to how you are going to take money from your customers? Most new restaurants do not make the customer go to the register, but rather, they make it as convenient as possible for those customers. The point of sale is going to be at the table, so why not make your restaurant POS take place entirely at the table? By having one of these items in place, you are able to take the payment directly at the table, and hand it back to the customer without ever leaving their site. That is something that is going to be of benefit to your customers and they certainly will appreciate it.

Finally, always make sure that when the customer is finished, they are aware of other items that you may have to offer. This may include a take-out menu that you may have, as that can drive a considerable amount of business as well. Make sure that you are training your servers regularly for this purpose and have them become intimately familiar with the menus so that they can give an honest opinion of the items that are being offered. When you do this, you will find that you increase your odds of success substantially.
