subject: Drum Lessons For Beginners [print this page]

Drums are perhaps an instrument that appeals to a lot of young people. Drummers are musicians usually seen as being very glamorous and hip. It is no surprise, therefore, that a lot of the youth who listen to rock and pop music aspire to be drummers themselves and look to take drum lessons. They soon find, however, that despite the drum lessons, playing the drums is not as easy as it seems.

What young people playing the drums need to realize is that like any other practice, the drums are a matter of getting to know and finding a grip of the basics of the instrument. Drum lessons are sometimes necessary for even those who have been playing the drums for some time but have still not got the hang of the basics.

What a lot of people taking drum lessons do not know is that holding the drumstick is one of the things that need to be mastered first. Most people who start to play the drums just take the liberty of holding the drumstick. What they do not realize is that this just makes the task of playing the drums can get extremely difficult if the beginners do not know the correct technique of holding the drumstick, despite all the drum lessons that they may be taking.

The most convenient techniques for holding the drumstick are the traditional grip, the French grip or something called the matched grip. Whichever style or technique you may choose to follow, the drum lessons should make you aware of the correct way of holding the drumstick for each of these styles. What you will find if you faithfully master any of these grips is that your drum lessons will become very easy to follow.

After you have learned how to hold the drumstick correctly as part of the drum lessons, you will have to progress to the technique of keeping time. Keeping time can be quite a difficult process for beginners, with them having to count time signatures, keep a count of the various types of beats and notes. If you have learned to do these things, your drum lessons are already bearing fruit.

One thing remains to be done - and that is tuning your drum set. Surprised? You thought only guitars and pianos needed to be tuned? Well, you were wrong. If you are taking drum lessons, you will soon know that drums need to be tuned as well. Someway through your drum lessons, you will come to realize that tuning the drum set is actually quite a vital part of playing the drums.

Another fairly important thing that you must learn to do is read sheet music. Master that and you are all set. Your drum lessons will suddenly have more meaning and you will find that you are playing the drums far better than ever before. Follow the simple steps and learn the skills that make playing the drums far more meaningful than ever before.
