subject: Running Tips - Getting Through A Water Stop At A Road Race [print this page]

Running a road race is such an exciting event to a runner - no matter what the distance. One of the things that you need to learn is how to navigate water stops properly. Here are some tips that will help you get through them.

Be aware when a water stop is coming up. There should be signs along the route - if not, make sure that you have studied the course map, so that you are aware of where they are. Watch out for other runners. Many runners will see a water stop coming up and dart to the side of the road where the water table are set up. They don't look to see if anyone is behind them - and I've seen many collisions due to this. So, be aware of the runners ahead of you.

You don't need to go to the first table at the water stop. That's where most runners will stop and there is usually a traffic jam there. Run past the first table and onto the next one. This will save you some time and frustration.

Many times the volunteers at the water stops will be handing out cups of water. If at all possible, try to take it from them. This will help you to avoid the craziness at the water tables. If you do get your water from a volunteer, reach out your hand as you are running towards them. This way they know that you are planning on taking the cup from them. And, after you get your cup - thank them.

Once you have your cup of water, drink slowly from the cup. If you gulp down the water too quickly it can cause you to choke. Also, take the cup of water and gently squeeze it. Drink out of the "v" that you've made by doing this. This will help you get most of the water without spilling it all over you.

Try to keep running after you receive your water so that you do not trip up someone behind you. However, if you feel like you want to walk through the water stop to make sure you get all the water you can (which happens a long at longer races or super hot days); make sure that you move to the side of the road. Don't start walking in the middle of the road causing a back up behind you.

At many races, there are trash cans located at the conclusion of the water stops. If possible, try to drop your cup in them. But, it is OK to drop your cup on the road. They will be picked up by the volunteers.
