subject: Poi Balls Tips and Tricks - The 3 Beat Weave Technique [print this page]

A few well-known techniques with poi balls are: weaves, reels, crossovers, windmills & fountains.

The more competent the performer, the more complicated and sophisticated moves they are able to achieve. A few more complex moves include body wraps, which consists of having to wrap a poi cord around the arm or leg, and then tugging it to move the poi in the opposite way. Split time techniques are possible,as are split direction, and several of the more challenging flows, like the '5 beat weave', isolations or hyperloop need a great deal of dexterity, sychronisation and great timing to complete. Brute strength isn't an issue, as force and control result from effective timing.

There are lots of standard types of technique. Both poi balls are typically spun in parallel lines, and may be spun in the very same direction (the 'weave' technique) or reverse direction (the 'butterfly' technique).

The Basic '3 Beat Weave' Technique

Regarded by lots of poi performers for being one of the fundamental techniques, this can be among the first couple of moves mastered by brand new poi performers. The poi balls are swung 180 degrees out of cycle with one another, in a forwards direction. When one of the poi gets to its maximum level it is swung downward around the front of the body. Once the poi that has been swung around the body gets to its minimum level, the 2nd poi reaches its maximum level on precisely the same side of the body. The 2nd poi is subsequently swung around the body in a comparable way to the way in which the 1st one was, whilst clearly in the other direction. In the mean time the 1st poi is swung around to its maximum level without switching sides. The performer's arms will now be crossed in front of his or herself. The 1st poi is swung downward around the front of the body so that it's on its initial side while the 2nd poi is swung to its maximum level. The 1st poi is then swung around to its maximum level and the 2nd to its minimum level without crossing sides. After that, the 1st poi is swung on top of the opposing arm & down around the front side of the body, while the 2nd poi is swung back up to its maximum level. The poi balls have reached the mirror position from the time the arms had been 1st crossed. From here exactly the same routine from when the arms were 1st crossed is employed, only just in mirror image. The routine is then duplicated so long as the performer wants to.

The basic weave is known as '3 beat' due to the fact that the poi balls are spun 3 times per cycle: once about the same side of the body (for example, left poi on the left hand side) and twice on the opposing side. Reverse weaves, behind the back weaves, & two beat, four beat, five beat, along with other weaves are additionally achievable. The 'seven beat weave' technique is regarded as an exceptionally difficult move to achieve with poi balls.
