subject: Bicycle Safety Tips [print this page]

With gas prices hitting all time highs every week it seems like, people are trying to find other modes of transportation so they don't have to pay over $4 a gallon for gas. One thing that I have noticed an increase in is people riding their bicycles. Bikes are a great way to get around as it uses no gas and saves you money and you also get a nice workout from it. With an increase in bikes their have been more bike lanes added to the roads throughout America but there still isn't enough. Riding a bike can be dangerous and you need to make sure that you take the necessary precautions to help avoid any accidents. If you are thinking about riding your bike instead of driving, here are some safety tips for you to consider.

The first and most important thing that not everyone does is making sure you wear a helmet. A helmet is there to protect your head if you get into an accident. I can't tell you how many times I have read stories of bicyclist not wearing a helmet and then getting into an accident and suffering a serious head injury or even die. Always make sure that you wear a helmet! The next tip for staying safe is to make sure that you always obey all traffic laws. You don't want to be doing crazy things like running red lights or weaving in and out of traffic. I'm sure you have seen clips of those bike messengers going through traffic, do not attempt this as it is extremely dangerous. A third tip for staying safe is to always be aware of your surroundings. What I mean by this is to make sure that you know what is going on around you so you are able to avoid any potential accidents. A fourth tip is to make sure that you never carry a second person on your bike. Doing so will make it difficult for you to steer the bike and could lead to potential accidents. A fifth tip to help you stay safe on the road is to always make sure your bike is running in tip top shape. You want to make sure the tires are inflated and you also want to make sure that your brakes are working properly. Not doing so will increase the chances of you getting into an accident.

Riding a bike instead of driving your car is a great way to save money while also helping the environment but you need to make sure that you take all the precautions necessary to stay safe.
