subject: How To Prevent Skin Aging [print this page]

Consumers are spending billions of dollars every year to prevent the skin from aging. However, retaining that youthful appearance takes more than just applying a little moisturizer. Eating a healthy diet, getting rid of stress and daily cleansing are essential to looking young and fresh.

Use Sunscreen

You've been taught that the sun is an enemy to your skin, and you should limit your exposure to the ultraviolet rays. However, the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D which is necessary for healthy bones and the absorption of calcium. Physicians recommend at least 15 minutes per day to gain the minimum daily requirements. Being out in the sun for long periods of time can also promote premature aging and cause skin cancer and brown spots. To protect your skin from the exposure to the sun, you should apply a sunscreen with SPF of 15 and above. Be sure to apply it first thing in the morning and get any areas that will be exposed to the sun. To get the best coverage, look for products that contain Helioplex or Mexoryl.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Younger looking skin starts from within. Nutritious foods can play a role in the way your skin develops wrinkles, and the way it keeps its youthful appearance. Select a diet that includes whole grains, fiber, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, omega 3 and lean protein. Foods that are high in fat and loaded with sugar have zero nutritional value, and they can have a damaging effect on your skin. Vitamin C has also been shown to have a positive impact on the appearance of your skin.

Follow a Skin Care Regimen

You don't have to shell out a lot of money to retain that youthful appearance. There are quite a few inexpensive products currently on the market that can help your skin to look younger and more vibrant. Make it a habit to cleanse your skin, exfoliate and moisturize your face at least twice a day. Look for products that are made with your skin type in mind. If you have oily skin, develop a skin care regimen to coincide with that. Don't forget about applying sunscreen before you put on your make up.

Soothe Away Stress

High levels of stress can cause blemishes and cause permanent wrinkles to form. To encourage young looking skin, set aside some time to relax. Doing something fun will help eliminate stress, and it will have a staggering effect on how your skin looks. Select activities that you enjoy like going for a bike ride, gardening and reading a book.

Quit Smoking

Nothing ages the skin like cigarettes. Smoking diminishes the production of collagen and elasticity that your skin requires to look young and fresh. It also releases damaging particles that can make your skin look old before its time. Plus, the repetitive motions of squinting and inhaling can cause permanent wrinkles to form.
