Gyratory crusher is widely used in the departments of metallurgy, mine, building material, chemical industry etc. It is mainly used in the first-stage coarse crushing for materials of various hardness, esp. in large-scale dressing plants. Therefore, it belongs to typical coarse crushing equipment. However, several concentrators also adopt huge jaw crushers to do the coarse crushing work. Therefore, it is necessary to specify the choosing problem of the gyratory crusher.

Gyratory crusher adopts the continuous crushing principle, thus the productivity is high, its working is relatively steady, the energy consumption is lower, granularity of the products is even etc. But it has its own disadvantages such as huge body, complex structures, high manufacturing and repairing expenditure, great investment in infrastructure and moderately complicated maintenance.

Jaw crusher adopts a discontinuous crushing principle, so the productivity is lower for its impact vibration, energy consumption is higher, and granularity of the products is not as regular as that of the gyratory crusher. But it possesses the merits of small height of the machine, simple structure, reliable working, easy manufacturing and easy maintenance. No matter what type of the crusher is, according to the comparison between the practical requiring parameter and the basic parameter of the crushers instructions, first the demand of feeding granularity, discharging granularity as well as the productivity should be satisfied.

Due to the relatively low productivity of the jaw crusher, most large-scale dressing plants generally adopt the gyratory crusher as in the first-stage coarse crushing. Besides, the reduction ratio of the jaw crusher is smaller than that of the gyratory crusher. The reduction ratio of a gyratory is able to reach 6 to 9.5, on rare occasion it can reach 13.5. But jaw crusher is mostly applied in the first-stage coarse crushing (cone crusher) in the small concentrators as well as quarries. If measured from the feeding, discharging granularity and productivity and these two types of machine can meet the requirement, and then we should make a decision from many aspects as the secondary, tertiary crushers used in the process flow, investment and infrastructural expenditure. All of those belong to type design task and here we just compare and choose from the crushers own characteristics.
