subject: The Oxford Picture Dictionary Review [print this page]

If you're an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher trying to find the supreme book to show your students vocabulary, then you definitely are going to love the Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual English). This publication is perfect for any ESL scholar and any ESL teacher. It could be used by students of all levels, and contains significant English words or terminology. We use this book at our ESL school, Hawaii Literacy's Drop In Center, since it can be utilized with any amount of student. As long as the student has learned their basic ABCs and principles of English reading, they can study from it effectively.

To understand the remarkable flexibility of this ESL publication, I will examine a bit more about how exactly it's utilized in our school. The Drop-In Center is a free ESL school for the local immigrant neighborhood of Hawaii, hence student work isn't consistent. Students are absolve to go and come and thus it's hard to have a standard lesson plan construction. In addition, because the school is generally run by volunteers, you will find usually inadequate ESL teachers to divide students in to various levels.

Of course, despite having these many advantages, the book is a reference book...a picture dictionary. Thus, in order to allow it to be interesting to students, the ESL teacher should incorporate it in to an effective classroom experience.

For my course, I frequently use the Teacher's Manual, which currently has ready built sample dialogues, lists of sentences for dictation, discussion questions, related language and other proposed activities. I might place in a quiz or two to help the students always check their comprehension.

Then I've them review the language independently at ESL teacher http://www.eslteacherguide.blogspot.com, a blog I made with the corresponding video classes and go home. We have the students work with only one page of the book a week, so that they are able to go home and absorb the words successfully. Some of the other ESL teachers at our school integrate the terminology within their grammar practices, or into their own self-created actions. Whatever your classroom emphasis is or what methods you employ, the Oxford Picture Dictionary is by far the best publication for American English vocabulary building.
