subject: What Does Power Usage Monitoring Mean? [print this page]

Electrical Usage monitors are designed to show you how you use electricity in your home. This allows you the opportunity to reduce your electrical consumption, your carbon footprint and save you money.

From performing a very simple set up, as described below, you will be able to send a wireless signal from a transmitter to your electrical usage monitor so you can then see the electrical consumption effects of switching your appliances and lighting on and off in your home,

What Is Involved In Setting An Electrical Monitoring Device Up.

When you purchase a wireless electrical usage monitor the monitor will come with all the parts necessary to get you started. These parts will include the monitor, power supply for the monitor, the wireless transmitter, the sensor for the transmitter and the batteries for the transmitter.

Setting up the monitor is also extremely easy. The simple steps are:

1- Plug the power supply in the monitor - as easy as charging your mobile phone.

2- Insert the batteries into the wireless transmitter

3- Pair the wireless transmitter and monitor display by simply pressing a few buttons on the monitor.

4- With the transmitter and monitor paired it now time to install the sensor to the electrical meter. Installing the sensor to the electrical meter is very easy; however, it is very important to first check that your electrical meter is up to specification in terms of safety. To do this you must first check the wires that come out from the bottom of the meter. If the wires show any signs of burns, cracks, being loose, being wet or bearing any cooper then YOU MUST call out a qualified electrician. If none of these signs are evident then you can install the sensor with great ease. If unsure consult a qualified person.

5- The sensor simple clips onto the cable that comes from the meter (full instructions and diagrams will be provided with the monitors instructions)

6- Next take the sensors output wire and plug into the transmitter.

7- That's it; you're ready to monitor your electrical consumption.

Once the monitor is running the display will show you your real time electricity consumption. Most electrical usage monitors for the home will show your usage in Kilo Watts, however, most monitors allow you to check your usage in various different readings., including carbon omissions and monetary value (the approximate cost of your usage).

Many monitors will also provide a history, so you can, for example, see your expenditure for yesterday, last week or even the last 30 days.
