Did you know that the Fourteenth amendment was adopted way back in the mid 1800s? The amendment is one of the reconstruction amendments, that include the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendments. Following the civil war, these amendments were adopted between 1865 and 1870:

1.The 13th amendment is known as the amendment that effectively ended slavery. It was proposed and ratified in 1865.

2.The 14th amendment was proposed 1866, and ratified in 1868.

3.The 15th amendment was proposed in 1869 and ratified in 1870.

They are also known as the Civil War Amendments or Reconstruction Era Amendments.

These three amendments were essential and helped in the reconstruction in the south following the war. Abraham Lincoln in the famous house divided speech, stated before these amendments were adopted, that the nation was half slave and half free. He said that the implementation of these amendments would make sure that all inhabitants of America would be able to receive the blessings of liberty. It guaranteed that the constitution would recognise the rights of ex - slaves and their family members.

The 14th amendment in addition has few interesting clauses which are quite interesting to check out:

1.Citizenship clause.

In 1857, the Supreme Court ruled in Dred Scott vs. Sandford that anyone of black origin couldn't attain American citizenship. The citizenship clause in the 14th amendment overruled this judgement.

2.Equal protection clause.

This clause necessitates that each state provides equal protection to everyone who live within its borders. It was this clause which was used in the 1954 Supreme Court ruling in Brown vs. Board. In this famous court case the Supreme Court ruled against racial segregation within the education system. It was also used as a grounds for the ruling in another case, Reed vs. Reed in 1971. The court ruled against any law that required any kind of sexual discrimination which subsequently contravenes the Equal Protection Clause.

3.Due Process Clause.

This prohibits any state or municipality from depriving an individual of liberty, property or life without the appropriate procedures that would ensure it is done absolutely fair.

One of the best things about these clauses within the 14th amendment is that they are still applicable today, nearly 140 years after their ratification. The Due process clause is particularly helpful if you are in financial difficulty and you are facing the foreclosure of your home.
