The reason being is because protein has been found to actually speed up your metabolism much more than when you consume carbohydrates or fats. The exact number is between 20 and 30% increase as compared to carbs and fats. Protein is very hard for your body to digest so it actually has to burn more calories.
Another thing you should do is start to cut out the starchy carbohydrates which include potatoes, breads, pastas, crackers, chips, cookies, cakes, and junk food. Chances are if you have a large waist or a good amount of body fat to lose, then you can be insulin resistant. The more body fat you have, the more insulin resistant you become, thus the fewer amounts of carbs you need to take in.
Also, by not ingesting too many carbohydrates, you are going to force your body to primarily burn body fat for fuel as opposed to the carbohydrates that you eat.
Just do these 2 things each day and you will be on your way to a flatter tummy in no time.
