subject: 5 Types Of Car Tires [print this page]

If you are planning to purchase new tires for your vehicle, you need to be aware of various types of car tires available in the market. Never rely on the tire salespersons advices, instead, browse the internet and do a small research about various tires and save your hard-earned money. Car tires are widely available in different types for a reason as various cars have specific needs in different conditions. Given below are the six types of car tires available in the market.

Mud tires

These car tires are designed for the muddy surfaces. These tires have chunky large tread patterns. Due to their big, open design, mud moves away from the lugs instantly. They never get impacted easily either. These tires are wider than the other types of tires, which decreases the likelihood of being sunk in the mud. The patterns and angles that are implanted in the tread lob the mud behind the car when it rolls. They use the centrifugal force for propelling the matter away from the mud tires preventing impaction.

High-performance tires

If you are looking for car tires because you perform highway driving or have a sports car, choosing high-performance tires is an ideal solution. The main material used is a compound made of soft rubber for increasing traction on roads, which makes you stay on the road when cornering at higher speeds. However, the tread life is shortened due to the soft rubber present in the tires. Compared to various types of tires, the high-performance tires have to be replaced more often.

Spare Tires

A normal spare tire is not manufactured for long-term usage. It is only used during emergencies. Spare tires are cheaper than the regular tires and they come with the roadside safety kit. But, the longer usage of spare tires creates too much pressure for the other tires in your vehicle which in turn, leads to more wear and tear of tires. Never drive your vehicle on highway speeds when a spare tire is installed. It should be used only for transporting yourself to a garage or tire shop for replacing the flat tire.

Snow Tires

These car tires consists of soft rubber that helps in gripping in ice and snow combined with additional snipes present in the treading which provide an extra grip as well. To find winter tires, the packaging will have a pictograph of snowflakes and mountains. This shows that the tire is approved by the ASTM. In the case of lighter cars, the friction increases due to studded winter tires and helps in preventing the car from sliding due to extreme climatic conditions.

Run-Flat Tires

These types of tires, which are manufactured to run after caused damage to or even a blowout, were invented recently. These tires consist of plastic inner cage, which helps the tire maintain its shape in case of sudden deflation. The drivers are alerted with the help of a pressure monitoring system in case of a blowout. Even after a blowout, the car continues to run and ensures the driver to never lose control over his/her car. However, it is not recommended to drive a car with a run-flat tire for a long time.

The above information is about five types of car tires. Choose the one apt for your vehicle to enjoy the benefits and your ride!
