subject: How The Size Of Cigars In The Same Line Will Alter The Overall Flavor [print this page]

You may have noticed that different size cigars, even when they are in the same line, will have different flavors. Are there any differences between the blends of different size cigars in the same line? Since the sizes of cigars in the same line can vary quite a bit, the blends of tobacco will have to be altered simply because of structural issues. Understanding these differences will help you to make an educated guess about the flavor of a cigar in the same line even before you light it.

When you smoke a smaller, narrow cigar, for example, the flavor of the wrapper will become more apparent. This is because the ratio of tobacco filler in comparison to wrapper will be reduced. Contrast this with a larger, thicker cigar. A larger cigar will have a greater amount of filler and, therefore, less flavor from the wrapper. This results in a more full-flavored smoke. So, even though the cigars may come from the same producer and be filled with the same kind of tobacco blend, smaller cigars will have a milder flavor while larger cigars will have a more robust flavor simply due to the ratio of filler to wrapper.

Additional factors such as how the tobacco blend is cut will also make a significant difference in the quality of the smoke. Higher-quality stogies are filled with whole leaves instead of tobacco scraps. Whole leaves are called "long filler." Tobacco scraps are known as "short filler."

Another type of tobacco used in cigars to hold long or short filler together is called binder tobacco. The ratio of binders to long or short fillers will also make a difference in the overall flavor. Since this ratio will vary depending on the size of the cigar, binders are another component that may make a difference in flavor even if the smokes come from the same line.

In some cases, the taste difference between different sizes is subtle. As you become a more experienced smoker, you will be able to detect these differences and choose the smokes that are most pleasing to your taste buds. To gain experience and to discover the cigar shapes and sizes that you enjoy best, try out a variety of sizes in the same line. When you cut the cap off of your cigars, take a look at the blend inside and how it is constructed. With time, you will begin to notice how this construction affects the flavor and quality of your smokes.
