subject: Mud Chemicals [print this page]

Mud chemicals are extensively used in the oil drilling industry. It is used in combination with a few other chemicals which helps in serving the purpose of an additive during the process of drilling a well. Mud chemicals can also be used in drilling natural gas wells, bore wells, water wells etc. Many diverse types and varieties of mud chemicals are used in the industry on a day to day basis.

Mud chemicals are a very important part of the entire process of drilling out a well. It is not feasible to conduct the drilling without the availability of mud chemicals. They have always been in demand for its different functions and roles that it plays and therefore also enhancing the work of drilling a well. It is very much recommended by the industry experts as it helps in preventing the formation of any other types of harmful fluids that can enter the bore well and cause problems. In order to prevent this unwanted formation of liquids mud chemicals create a hydrostatic pressure that works very effectively. Mud chemicals are also used in order to avoid any damages to the well and avoid corrosion during the process of drilling or after wards.

Mud chemicals are made up of many different particles and materials. The basic composition of mud chemicals includebentonite powder, biocide (amine type), calcium carbonate (Sized) 95 & 98+ purity, calcium carbonate flakes (under trial), calcium chloride 77%, causticied lignite, chrome lignite, citric acid, CMC ( R & HV), defoamer (Silicone based, drilling detergent, E P lubricant, glycol, guar gum (drilling grade), K-lignite, mica (LCM), nut plug, PAC (R & HV), PHPA, sodium chloride 99% (PVD-free flowing), sodium formate and sulfonated asphalt.

Mud chemicals are known for its basic functions to be able to remove any kind of fittings from well, to ensure formation evaluation, lastly to control the formation of any kind of unwanted pressure in the well, , to be able to provide the tools and bits with hydraulic energy that optimizes the impact of a jet at the bottom of the well, facilitate cementing and completion during the process, also to support and lubricate the tools in order to avoid high torque and drag in the well, to maintain the stability of all the components, and lastly to minimize the effects of drilling on the environment at large and make sure that it does not harm the biodiversity at any point.
