subject: Sap Business One Small Business Erp Software Notes [print this page]

If you are long time small business owner then you probably remember old-good-days marketing trick with slogans like ERP brings you change management or lets go ahead with innovations. Modern business climate is probably about stability and getting ahead of technology obsolescence. This might be especially related to small businesses. As we are writing this article in June of 2012 US economy seems to be in limbo and small entrepreneurs are waiting the signals from economy indicators. But we have to do something. If you are on DOS accounting package then you should consider moving to something more modern. We would like to share ideas about SAP small business package Business One:

Q. We are on Great Plains DOS and we understand that it is no longer supportable. We are planning to sell the business but potential buyers are looking at accounting platform from the top of their checklist. Is B1 a good way to move on?

A. SB1 might be a good fit if you do not need historical data conversion. There is the way to upgrade all the level to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010. This project is also challenging and it may take up to thirty hours to migrate

Q. Our old accounting is hosted in WindowsNT server and we believe that the hardware is stable. We would like to postpone migration to new accounting as long as possible to current economic hardship

A. Every business decision should be respected. You should expect higher cost of migration in the future as ERP implementation projects typically have data migration phase

Q. Why SAP Business One?

A. First of all it is designed for small companies and midmarket. It is hosted in Microsoft SQL Server and compatible with 64 bit computing. Business logic is reasonably advanced to cover such features as Inventory, GL, AR, AP, Discrete Manufacturing and CRM to name a few

Q. By why not QuickBooks or Peach Tree?

A. The price is not the only participant in decision matrix. Think about flexibility. Microsoft SQL Server DB platform is open for integrations and custom reporting. Plus you can add user defined tables and fields directly in setup. If you need moderate customization then programming could be done in Microsoft Visual Studio C# or VB as code samples are available in these programming languages

Q. We are bit confused. We had the impression that SAP is for large publicly owned companies. And here you are talking about small business ERP?

A. SAP offers business software products to all market niches including small companies. Business One was designed for your niche from ground up in Israel and later on acquired by SAP
