subject: Fans: From Miniature To Mega-Sized [print this page]

Fans are a simple technology that have provided cooling breezes and helped to relax people for centuries. The quintessential picture of vacation spots in the tropics or in the old South has a slow moving ceiling fan circulating the air. This simple technology has helped to make homes, factories and businesses comfortable for many years.

Long before there was air conditioning units, fans were all the rage. The homes of the wealthy were always cool because they had ceiling fans in almost every room. Fans were the standard for comfort and elegance for the well to do for a long time.

Fans have come a long way. They evolved from the simple hand held models made out of palm fronds or cardboard to ceiling fans, table top fans and even miniature fans that can fit on the dashboard of a car or in the palm of your hand. The materials fans are made from have also changed. Initially they were made of wood. They later began to be made of metal. Today fans are manufactured from all manner of synthetic materials and can be found in every shape, size and color imaginable.

Fan manufacturers can make fans for a wide variety of uses. A fan manufacturer may specialize in table top fans or other types of standing fans for the home or office. Some fan manufacturers only work with large fans for industry. There may even be a fans manufacturer that makes the entire range; from the little ones that you place on your hat or your dash board to the fans that are ten or twenty feet tall and used in industrial wind tunnels.

The materials used to make fans have come a long way. Yet the basic principle remains essentially unchanged.
