Aliens writer Damon Lindelof was hired to turn Prometheus into a standalone filmwith an entirely newmythologyrunning parallel to theAlien Quadrilogy. Starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green,
Guy Pearce, Idris Elba and Sean Harris, the premise of the film follows archeologists Elizabeth Shaw (Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Marshall-Green) as they discover a star map among the remnants of several unconnected ancient human civilizations.
In light of this discovery, the Weyland Corporation finances a space expeditionto explore the destination of the star map (LV-223) and possibly find a supposedly
peaceful, advanced alien civilization that Shaw believes may hold the key to understanding the genesis of mankind.
The themes are larger as is the context. Scott presents promise, a mystery that lingers and
an investigative experience that descends into horrific discovery. While it may have plentyof flaws and falls short of "masterpiece" territory, it does not at any point sink into a failure
of epic proportions as some of the previous Alien films did and certainly avoids the trivial excessiveness of the Alien vs. Predator series.
Anticipated and billed as a prequel to Alien and then de-bunked into a "standalone" mythology, it becomes increasingly clear that the "standalone mythology" commentary was disingenuous atthe very least. Prometheus borrows much of its procedure, technique and characterizations fromtheAlien franchise.
Prometheus does not explain the events prior to Alien on LV-426 (Acheron), it does give a shade
of it and presents the general proposition of mystery that leads the audience to speculate and to
get involved. Despite criticisms galore, we are all discussing what happens next and how it will
all tie together. In spite of whatever criticism, if Scott achieve that and manage to make a better
film than he's made in years, he's done something right even if its not a sci-fi "masterpiece.
