subject: Why Thrift Stores Are Becoming More Popular [print this page]

Thrift stores are gaining in popularity, as projections show that the numbers are going to continue to grow. Some blame the economy, but the restoration of thrift stores as popular shopping centers need not be viewed as something negative. Merchandise is often average to superior in quality, so consumers are finding it to be a winning situation. Sometimes rough times make people reexamine their priorities.

In the day and age when retro is in, the thrift stores offer so much variety in recycled clothing to update the hippie era. There is also more affordable priced high end clothing that is often available for sale. It is easy to pick up a fashion magazine and copycat what is seen through individual purchase at the thrift stores.

Many people are also spending more time decorating their homes. Kitsch is where it is at in many art lover communities, and the potential for finding it in thrift stores is increasing. Even if it cannot be found ready made, self assembly of one's own pop art is not unheard of in this world. If a more classical approach to art is desired, then thrift stores are renown for framed art and sculpture availability.

Charitable organizations are behind many of the thrift stores in cities all over the world. The one near you is putting jobless people to work. Many people have not been able to secure jobs, so some thrift stores employ people with donated goods so that they are essentially self funding. Other thrift stores give or donate clothing and other goods to needy or third world countries. Each store is different, but just by shopping at a thrift store, people might just be changing the world for the better.

Surprisingly, many do not realize that oftentimes a source for remodeling home can be found inside local thrift stores. Many big box distributors donate building materials and appliances to thrift stores for the tax deduction. Other times, people donate newer materials and supplies for the same reason. Even if they do not, old dressers have been changed into vanities, and older bed frames have been used to revamp customized bedroom sets. People are only limited by their imaginations.

Shopping is a form of exercise. It can be as hard or as easy of a workout as someone likes. Whatever it is, when someone is shopping at a thrift store, that is less time at home on the couch or in front of the computer. Just standing and going through the racks of clothes is a mild workout, but more intense workouts can be obtained by shopping on the lower shelves located all over thrift stores. Weight lifting can also be accomplished by picking up boxes and furniture around the house to donate, just be sure to use proper lifting technique to avoid injury.

Many schools and work centers are requiring people to supply their own clothing for work or school or business. This can prove to be less costly because thrift stores are well known sources of uniforms. There are many racks of school uniforms or medical scrubs or restaurant uniforms found in the typical resale shops, at a fraction of the price for those that are special ordered. There are testimonies of many happy consumers.

With the tightening on the economy, people are going back to basics. Realizing that value can be found in thrift stores, people are remembering not to waste perfectly good working material. In a time where recycling is increasing in appreciation, people are learning that they are not really missing out by not buying from a big box distributor.
