subject: All About Arm Lifts [print this page]

Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, is a procedure in which excess skin and fat along your underarm caused by genetics, age, and weight are reduced. This gives the arm a smoother, toned appearance that is proportional to your body shape. If you suffer from loose or sagging skin on your upper arms, you may have to seriously consider an arm lift as an option. A combination of liposuction followed by an arm lift is another option.

Why choose brachioplasty?

While it is true that exercise will strengthen the muscle in your arms, it is not possible for exercise alone to rid yourself of excess skin. This skin has lost its elasticity or may have become weakened by tissues or fat deposits.

Through an arm life, you will achieve a reduction of fat and skin, smoother skin and contoured arms, and a more toned appearance. If you are tired of having poor arm definition and are ready to flaunt sexy, toned arms, then you may be the ideal candidate for an arm lift.

Is this the right procedure for me?

The ideal candidate for brachioplasty is an adult who has a significant amount of skin laxity, or sagging skin, on their upper arms. You should not be significantly overweight nor have fluctuating weight. You must be a fairly healthy individual without current serious medical conditions or illnesses that may increase risk during surgery. The ideal candidate has an optimistic outlook as well as realistic expectations of the surgery and results.

What happens during an arm lift?

After a consultation to determine whether you are the right candidate for the procedure and to determine which surgery option will suit you best, you will be ready for your arm lift to be scheduled.

The first step in brachioplasty, like most surgeries, is having the area marked out by your surgeon with dissolvable ink to guide the surgery or liposuction. Anesthesia is next provided with either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia to be determined by your doctor. Incisions are placed under the armpit and along some of the groove between the tissue planes. Excess skin and fat are removed; the skin is gathered, tucked and sewn back to itself. Some compressive garments are used in the post-operative period and close follow-up will be provided by your doctor.

There will be an almost immediate difference in your arms skin and shape. Your healing process will be accompanied by swelling and bruising that will depend on your body and the type of surgery done. Your appearance will be greatly enhanced by your new toned, shapely arms.
