subject: How To Stay Motivated When Dieting [print this page]

Dieting can be incredibly difficult, especially if you have tried and failed a number of times before. It can be all too easy to give up when the going gets tough instead of sticking it out, but keeping your motivation up can seem impossible sometimes. For many people, food is an addition and it can be a very difficult one to break, so it is important that you have a strong support system in place to help you at times such as this.

If you are struggling to feel motivated when dieting there are a number of things that you can do though. Many people find that their diet can stall after a certain amount of time, and this can be caused by a number of reasons. This kind of stall is often referred to as a plateau and some of the likely causes can be snacking more than you realise, increased portion sizes, not getting enough exercise, lack of sleep, stress, and many other issues.

If you have plateaued it is first important to remember the great achievements you have reached so far. Look back at your weight loss to date and congratulate yourself on getting so far you have worked incredibly hard to reach the point at which you are now at and you should not forget this. You should then look at everything you have been eating for the past few weeks and see if this could be the cause of your plateau. Try keeping a completely accurate and honest food diary for one week, while still eating the same foods as previous weeks, and track everything that you eat, including drinks.

After you have done this you will be able to check whether you are consuming too many calories, or if you have too much fat, carbohydrates or salt in your diet. You can then reduce your intake in the areas needed. It might also benefit you to reduce your calorie intake slightly, but only if doing so will not pose a risk to your health.

Many people find that exercise can help them when feeling depressed or low, and this might be the case for you. Exercise will also help to increase your weight loss as you will be able to burn extra calories when walking, running, cycling or working out at the gym, so it will help no matter what.

You might also find that speaking with understanding friends, family or fellow dieters will help, as you can get the problems you have been experiencing off your chest and begin to find the answer you need to get your diet back up and running.
