subject: A Guide To Cigar And Beverage Pairing [print this page]

The traditional image of a cigar smoker is of someone enjoying a smoke with a glass of whiskey in hand. However, that's not really accurate. Quite a few cigar smokers, particularly those new to it, wonder, "What should I drink while cigar smoking?" Sadly, there's really no single answer to that question. It really depends on why you're smoking in the first place, as well as on your personal preferences and the type of cigar in question.

Let's consider "purpose". One of the reasons that people smoke a cigar is to enjoy the different flavors offered by the tobacco and the wrapper. Cigar smokers who enjoy rating cigars have found that many drinks will actually alter the way the cigar tastes.

If you are smoking to rate a cigar or to find out what flavors it really offers, it's best to drink nothing or stick with water. Because water is odorless and tasteless, it won't change the way the cigar tastes. This allows all the flavors to come through in the smoke. However, drinking anything else will alter your perceptions.

Some cigars pair better with different types of drinks, as well. If you have a rich smoke, you might find that a cup of coffee or espresso is the best drink. However, if you have a lighter smoke, a blond or India pale ale might be the best option. Some smokers also prefer to drink cognac or a high quality single malt whiskey with their cigars, as well. As a note, alcoholic beverages are really only consumed when you're relaxing. The reason for this is that even the alcohol flavor can change the way the smoke tastes, altering your experience considerably.

Personal taste is really the most common thing dictating what you drink while you smoke. If you don't drink alcohol, you might find that your favorite soda pairs well with your preferred smoke. You might find that you prefer a sparkling cider or something with an equally clean finish to help cleanse your palate. Perhaps the best advice is to experiment with different options and find out what works best for you, personally. You might just find that you enjoy a variety of different drinks, from coffee to water and everything in between, depending on the cigar you're smoking and the reason for smoking it. Experimentation is also a lot of fun and a great excuse to light up.
